Overview of VMware System Backup Methods

In a VMware environment, two common backup methods are snapshot backups and clone backups. Each has its own specific use cases and operational requirements.

1. Snapshot Backup

A snapshot, also known as a restore point, is a saved state of the system at a particular moment (including all content), which can be restored later if needed.

Steps to Take a Snapshot

1. Start the Linux operating system (snapshot backups are performed while the system is running).

2. In the VMware menu bar, select “VM” -> “Snapshot” -> “Take Snapshot.”

3. Name the snapshot (naming helps with later recovery operations).

Steps to Restore a Snapshot

1. Simulate a failure in the Linux operating system (such as deleting system files or corrupting the system).

2. In the VMware menu bar, select “VM” -> “Snapshot” -> “Revert to Snapshot,” and choose the snapshot based on its name.

Summary

Snapshot backups are ideal for short-term backups, especially when frequent backups are needed. When taking a snapshot, the operating system in the virtual machine is usually running.

2. Clone Backup

Cloning means copying. Clone backups require that the operating system is shut down during the process.

Steps to Perform a Clone Backup

1. Use the shutdown button or relevant commands to shut down the Linux operating system.

2. Right-click the operating system you want to clone, select “Manage” -> “Clone.”

3. Follow the wizard to perform the clone backup, ensuring you select the “Full Clone” type.

4. Once the clone is complete, a new, identical operating system instance will be created.

Summary

Clone backups are more suitable for long-term backups, and the system must be shut down during the cloning process. This method is also commonly used to quickly create multiple identical machines.

Difference between snapshot and clone

The biggest difference between a clone and a snapshot is that after a clone there are 2 machines, while after a snapshot there is still 1 machine (similar to a windows restore point). It is recommended to use snapshots before any later dangerous operations.

Conclusion

In VMware environments, snapshot backups are best for short-term, frequent backups with the system running, while clone backups are suited for long-term needs, requiring the system to be shut down, creating an entirely new machine.
